This apartment is located in a quiet residential area of northern zone of Rome. It had a big problem; it had low sunlight because of bad exposition and because it is at ground floor of a building. Its quality was the large terrace that almost completely surrounds the apartment.
The original internal partition was all divided into small rooms forced between hallways. It had only one bathroom and a very small living room without any relationship with the terrace.
The only requests of the client were a second bathroom and a living room as large as possible that could become the center of the house, with a kitchen not necessarily divided, also suitable for hosting friends.
To satisfy these requests it was necessary the demolition of all internal partitions and the re-proportioning of the internal space.
Only two elements define the composition: the linear element of a hollow wall and a large and overhanging bookcase. Hallways have been permanently deleted.
This hollow wall separates living area from sleeping area and concentrates all house facilities (two bathrooms, laundry, mezzanines, closets and wardrobes).
This sculpture element is characterized by a deep and accentuated splay that gives access to two bedrooms, closed by wooden pivot doors.
The sleeping area is conceived as flexible. In fact, the partition between two bedrooms, made with a removable red wardrobe can allow, if necessary, the transformation into a single large bedroom.
The second element of the composition is a large bookcase with long masonry shelves. These are also a visual filter for kitchen area.
